At The Savannah Cabinet Shop we carry many different types of kitchen cabinets. We have in-house custom cabinetry, off-site custom cabinetry, semi-custom cabinetry and stock cabinetry. Though many people have heard of these types of kitchen cabinets, few are clear on what the actual distinctions are.
Simply, these terms represent the amount of choice and customization one has when designing the kitchen cabinet plans. Custom cabinetry has the highest amount of options and stock cabinetry has the lowest. As a general rule of thumb, the price spectrum follows this same ordering. Custom cabinetry has the ability to be the most costly, stock cabinetry the most cost effective.
The difference between in-house and off-site custom cabinetry is where the cabinets are actually constructed. The Savannah Cabinet Shop’s in-house custom cabinetry is made at our workshop in East Savannah. As Savannah’s exclusive retailer for Wood-Mode, we carry their line of custom cabinetry made in the heart of Pennsylvania.
The only limits to both types of custom cabinetry are the imagination of the client and the kitchen designer, the skills of the engineer and craftsman, and the artistry of the finisher. Materials, wood species, finishes and construction type can all be scaled up and down depending on the client’s wishes and budget. Cabinet designs can be customized down to a sixteenth of an inch, resulting in more gross storage space and the minimum amount of filler area. The most organizational components are available for use and cabinetry can be custom designed to accommodate any feature in any application.
The final distinction between in-house and off-site custom cabinetry is the level of involvement available to both the kitchen designer and client after the order has been placed. By choosing The Savannah Cabinet Shop’s in-house custom cabinetry you have the opportunity to visit your kitchen cabinets during their construction. The result is the ability to spot mistakes and miscommunications before they become problems, and therefore your anxiety of the unknown elements is greatly diminished as you wait for your cabinetry to be delivered and installed.
Semi-custom cabinetry sits in the middle of both the option and price spectrum. At The Savannah Cabinet Shop we carry MasterBrand’s Schrock line of semi-custom cabinetry. Multiple wood, door style, finish, organizational features and construction options are available, but you are limited to those options. Standard cabinet types are available with the option to customize the width and depth down to the inch.
Stock cabinetry has the lowest amount of door style, species, finish and feature options, and cannot be customized past it’s standard dimensions, but is the most cost effective option. Because of this, it if most often used by contractors, clients with modest budgets, and in secondary rooms such as laundry rooms and garages. The Savannah Cabinet Shop offers MasterBrand’s Contractor’s Choice line of stock cabinetry and the imported stock line Entourage.
When trying to decide which type of kitchen cabinets are the best fit for your project, the most effect way is by having an honest conversation with your kitchen designer. Let them know your expectations and desires for the look, function and construction of your cabinet design. Be as specific and honest about your budget as possible. Your kitchen designer will be able to help you weigh the pros and cons of each line against these expectations to find the best fit for your budget. Call, email or come by The Savannah Cabinet Shop today and we’ll begin the process together.
